Infrared spectroscopy is routinely used for characterising proteins and other components of tissues and membranes, but usually only at the macro level. AFM-IR is a new technique that combines the high resolution of atomic force microscopy with the molecular information content of infrared spectroscopy, delivering spectacular spatial resolution of more than 50nm. This ability to observe chemical domains at the nanoscale makes AFM-IR ideal for biophysics researchers.
