Bruker Hysitron PI 89 SEM PicoIndenter

The new Bruker Hysitron PI 89 SEM PicoIndenter is an in-situ nanomechanical testing system for electron microscopes, for analysing material deformation.

This is the next generation of Bruker’s series of Hysitron PicoIndenter in-situ test instruments for SEM. Built on state-of-the-art capacitive transducer technology, the PI 89 is a versatile, advanced instrument with powerful capabilities.

High-Strength Material Deformation

The new instrument enables testing at higher loads and in more extreme environments than previously possible. This is ideal for research into the deformation mechanisms of high-strength materials.

The force and displacement range is unmatched, combining exclusive capacitive transducer and intrinsic displacement technologies with Bruker’s high-performance controller.

Flexible and Versatile

The PI 89 SEM PicoIndenter is the first in-situ instrument with two rotation and tilt stage configurations. This opens up unique possibilities:

  • Flexible sample positioning towards the electron column for top-down imaging.
  • Tilt samples toward the FIB column for milling.
  • Spindle rotation for crystallographic alignment.
  • Compatible with a wide range of detectors for structure-property correlation.
The University of Alabama is excited to be the first recipient of Bruker’s Hysitron PI 89 SEM PicoIndenter in-situ nanomechanical testing unit.
Dr. Gregory Thompson - Director, Alabama Analytical Research Center
The state-of-the-art capabilities of this platform to achieve extremes in temperature while simultaneously applying load will provide unprecedented structure characterisation capture, including Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction and Electron Backscattered Diffraction, in support of multiple research programs.
Dr. Keivan Davami - Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Alabama Analytical Research Center

Unique Capabilities

  • Automated nanoindentation
  • Accelerated mechanical property mapping (XPM)
  • Fatigue testing
  • Nanotribology
  • Push-to-Pull (PTP) tension for thin films and nanowires (patented)
  • Direct-pull tension
